🠇 Bro Is Doing Anything But Drawing

did some intense backloggd research, and it seems video games didn't get good until 1993 (first year with 5+ games that are rated 4/5 stars or above)
these are the games btw
i'm putting a star by the games i've played and like :3
1. mega man x
2. castlevania: rondo of blood
3. super mario bros. 3 (the snes port)
4. day of the tentacle
5. super mario all-stars
6. doom
7. the legend of zelda: link's awakening 🟊

... after typing that i wanted find out during which year did games get REALLY good (what year has the entire first page of games with 4/5 or above), and the answer to that is 2021.
for the curious
1. disco elysium
2. outer wilds echoes of the eye
3. outer wilds archaeologist edition (wtf that's the same game twice?)
4. mass effect legendary edition
5. the binding of isaac: repentence
6. the great ace attorney chronicles
7. final fantasy xiv: endwalker
8. mass effect 2
9. tsukihime: a piece of blue glass moon
10. library of ruina
11. the binding of isaac: repentance (...? this one say's it's for afterbirth, the higher one is for rebirth)
12. the legend of heroes: trails through daybreak
13. lost judgement
14. resident evil 4 vr
15. crosscode: a new home
16. deltarune chapter 2
17. death stranding: director's cut
18. devil may cry 5 + vergil
19. gothic the chronicles of myrtana: archolos
20. metroid dread
21. jack jeanne
22. psychonauts 2
23. ghost of tsushima
24. castlevania: aria of sorrow 🟊 but it's specifically the port in the advance collection
25. scarlet hollow
26. it takes two
27. the elder scrolls v: skyrim - anniversary edition
28. judgement
29. nier replicant
30. honkai 3rd impact: outerworld traveler
31. cruelty squad
32. final fantasy vii remake intergrade
33. inscryption
34. before your eyes
35. demons roots
36. slow damage
37. blazing hope
38. spiritfarer
39. super mario 3d world + bowser's fury
40. metro exodus: enhanced edition
41. mass effect 3
42. hitman 3
43. nioh 2
44. rhythm doctor
45. neo: the world ends with you
46. little nightmares ii
47. imposter factory
48. sound voltex: exceed gear
49. final fantasy: pixel remaster
50. honkai impact 3rd: the phantom of the theater
51. echo
52. super mario 64 plus
53. metroid dread: special edition
54: blasphemous: wounds of eventide
55. devil may cry 5 deluxe edition + vergil
56. super metroid redux
57. honkai impact 3rd: hacked
58. virche evermore: error:salvation 🟊
59. touhou mystia's izakaya
60. umineko no naku koro ni saku: nekobako to musou no koukyoukyoku

good thing i started making a list. it includes dlc and ports and stuff! i'm not sure if that all counts. now let's see what happens if i filter it to only include main games

...

then there is no year where games are REALLY good, unless i lower my standards to 30 games that are 4/5+ instead of 60. 1993 is still the first year of ~good~ gaming though, because it just removes super mario all-stars (collection of ports) and super mario bros. 3 (the favorite from that quartet of ports).

let's say i lower it to 30 community-decided best main games. then the first year of great gaming is 2023.
click if you dare
1. baldur's gate 3
2. alan wake ii
3. resident evil 4: deluxe edition
4. the legend of zelda: tears of the kingdom
5. in stars and time
6. pikmin 4
7. armored core vi: fires of rubicon
8. theatrhythm final bar line
9. pizza tower
10. octopath traveler ii
11. misericorde: volume one
12. chants of sennaar
13. hi-fi rush
14. the talos principle ii
15. super mario bros. wonder
16. sakura no toki: sakura no mori no shita wo ayumu
17. void stranger
18. lies of p: deluxe edition
19. bomb rush cyberfunk (es oomf)
20. lies of p (??)

22. blasphemous ii
23. little goody two shoes
24. street fighter 6
25. the cosmic wheel sisterhood
26. tloz tears of the kingdom deluxe edition (???)
27. undertale yellow
28. peaks of yore (me playing snes games)
29. gravity circuit
30. sanabi
31. a space for the unbound

could actually be true, could be recency bias. backloggd was created in 2019, if that means anything. in my perfect world i would love to see how the ratings would look if everyone who has ever touched a single video game was made to participate in rating.

while i'm here: it's link time babeyyyy

how do YOU pronounce zines? out of curiosity

I have to work today... I need to motivate myself... But I still want to try writing about the second first place subject in the poll: zines!!! I've been getting into zines more and more lately (as a hobby/interest, I mean, not like I've been getting invited or accepted into zines more lol) so I'm really excited to get to talk about it..!!!

Warning for a very long post with pictures! )

In other, unrelated (or is it) news... My TFL application was accepted!!! So now I have 4 weeks to finish my PRFR fanlisting, which should be plenty of time. :D [community profile] ficinabox sign-ups just opened, and late noms too, so now I have to decide whether I'm going to be requesting new stuff or not. I'm giving myself today and tomorrow to think about it...

I pronounce it zeens BTW, although I sometimes slip up because my brain is like "NO WRONG THIS IS FRENCH, FOOL"

the literary discourse machine

Prefacing this with the innate knowledge that it's really not something that should irritate me. But I keep seeing youtube thumbnails and screenshots of posts that complain about how modern writing all feels "cheap", poor quality, and vapid, etc. And to this I say.... Why are you only picking commercial paperbacks and then complaining about commercial writing!!!

Like hello, it is not Ali Hazelwood's fault that you are reading a romance novel and expecting literary fiction? You people NEED to read books that don't come off the display tables at Barnes & Noble. The Coin by Yasmin Zaher was literally published last year, and it is one of the most beautiful, insightful, profound works of fiction I have ever read. I promise you, there are THOUSANDS of works coming out every year like this one, and they will fulfill your need for insightful art.

I get this irritation a lot in general whenever I see anyone complaining about anti-intellectualism or consumerism on tiktok or social media--the problem here is that you are searching for anything that ISN'T vapid on a social media networking site. Those platforms have been used for other kinds of art, but that just isn't the design, right? You don't get to have it both ways. You can't log onto the Digital Opium app and then complain about everyone being sedated.

I continually see people putting women's writing in the crossfire as if they are ruining some sanctified art form, when the novel has been seen as vapid and effeminate from the time of the literal printing press. The problem isn't "modern writing," you just aren't looking in the right places for your art. Obviously there are critiques to be made on an industry level of the need for an author to simplify their work into social media content for marketing purposes, but from a consumer perspective, the answer to this problem could not be any simpler: Read literary fiction. Read books that come from small presses and unknown authors. Read self-published works that come to you from somewhere besides amazon unlimited. Read international fiction!! Maybe even read a little poetry since lord knows you people are starving for it!!!

Or, you know, keep reading commercial fiction if you genuinely enjoy it, but don't be a dick about it the whole time.

And in caring about this enough to rant this long, I've only given my attention to the discourse machine...... The only way to win is to unplug your internet I fear

moose

English took a lot of terms from Algonquian languages, because they were the dominant local tongues on the northeastern seaboard of North America when English settlers arrived, including Powhatan, Massachusett, and Miꞌkmaq, as well as around the Great Lakes/southern Canada, including Cree, Ojibwe, and Shawnee. (Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Blackfoot, way to the west, are also Algonquian, but we didn’t take many words from them.) [Sidebar: The Iroquoian languages are unrelated, and while we got a lot of place names from those, we didn’t get many standard words.] All of which by way of explaining, just as for Nahuatl I needed to use a subset to have a manageable theme week, so for words from Algonquian languages -- this time, specifically animal names, starting with The Big Guy:

moose (MOOS) - (N.A.) n., a large deer (Alces alces) of northern North American and Eurasian forests, having a broad pendulous muzzle, humped shoulders, and large, palmate antlers in the male.

mister moose is big in the woods
Thanks, WikiMedia!

Called elk in British English, which is confusing to me, as in North America that means a very different very large deer, Cervus canadensis, also called wapiti -- which latter name also comes from an Algonquian language, either Cree or Shawnee. [Sidebar: There are no moose/elk in the British Isles, and for a few centuries, "elk" generally meant any horse-sized cervid.] Moose are the largest living cervid, and the second largest land mammal of North America (bison bulk heavier, though they aren't as tall). We got the name around 1600 from an Eastern Algonquian language, compare Eastern Abenaki mos, Massachusett moos, Narragansett moos, and Penobscot mos, all of which derive from Proto-Algonquian *mo˙swa, "it strips", referring to how a moose strips tree bark when feeding.

workweek reading recs (18 August 2025)

I was curating this and it turned into the "AI is bullshit" special edition because that's what I've been reading a lot about lately. So I broke it into two: the "AI is bullshit" special edition and everything else. I tried to focus on fun reads for "everything else" because the AI section was such a bummer.

Everything ElseAI Is BullshitI don't think I am a draconian mod and I probably won't delete any article shares that are pro-AI unless they contain egregious misinformation or disinformation - in which case, I will provide documentation. [I will delete any posts with dis- or mis- information on any subject, BTW. I will also delete any posts that promote hateful (racist, transphobic, sexist, homophobic, antisemitic, Islamophobic, etc) worldviews.]
That said, don't #$^&!ing argue with me about this in the comments of this post. I'm not in the mood for it today and I won't be in the mood for it tomorrow.

thestoryinside

If you're anything like us, you'll no doubt have a mountain of books that you just never get around to reading. Well, that's where [community profile] thestoryinside comes in - have someone choose your book for you!

The process is simple: join the community, and each month sign up to be partnered with a buddy, who will then choose a book from your 'to read' list. At the end of each month there will be a community post to discuss your thoughts on the book(s) you read!

However, we're putting a twist on the traditional 'pick for me' routine and each month we'll vote on what genre of book we'll be reading; now, of course this is open to personal interpretation, for example, if the genre is horror and you're not a big fan, you could go for a Goosebumps book, or even Twilight. There will be an opportunity in each voting post to ask any questions you might have.

So yesterday I was watching videos for Tycoon Mode on the CN/TW version of P5X and AHHHHHHHHH RENAGI SPOTTED!!!!

MY BABIES!!! THEY ARE MARRIED AND IN LOVE I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL 😤🖤❤️

I'm so sad b/c I discovered that Ren has a school uniform version of his nendoroid and I hope one day Nagisa gets one too b/c I don't even wanna BEGIN to price out what it would take to get a custom nendo of him...orz Also CHOP CHOP, Sega, Nagisa needs a butler outfit to match with Ren ASAP! >:D

My silliness aside, it was a peaceful, restful weekend! Not looking forward to the week ahead, but fingers crossed it's at least manageable! 🤞

an incomplete exchange autobiography

The poll results are in!!! Two of the options got the most votes so I'm going to do one today and one tomorrow, I guess. You can look at the previous post to see it, but I'll summarize the results in a top 4 anyway:

  1. Talk about zines and talk about exchanges got the most votes!

  2. Talk about kinks came out second place.

  3. Then my Internet anecdotes came out third place by virtue of getting one extra vote.

  4. Fourth place is taken up by sunshine_revival and Fannish 50.

I realized I forgot to explain what my unfinished Fannish 50 post was LOL, but basically it was a post of 10 fics that had a big (positive, because I don't wanna dwell on negativity) impact on me. My main issue was that I couldn't find 10 fics... I think I was at 7... ish. I suppose 7 is a good enough number though.

So, right now, the plan is: exchanges today, zines tomorrow, kinks the day after, and then maybe I'll at least tell the copycat story since it was the one people seemed most intrigued by. o7

I don't know how long this will be, kinda scared ngl. I also don't know if it's going to be interesting!!! ETA: The answer is: pretty long, and kinda negative... You've been warned, I guess! )

Closing words, whether you read my rambling or not..! I was working on some little pixel art today... I'd like to make Neopets-style adoptable for Lysandre Labs. This is a very rough WIP but I thought it might be fun to do a Litleo in different "Paintbrush" colors... We'll see how that goes...

As always, I hope whoever is reading this is having a good day, and if not, that it'll get better soon! I'd really like to get out of the house more next week, especially now that I know how to go to the nice park nearby. Maybe I'll even work on my SOD assignment there... It'll depend on the weather, though..! 🌻
