elyusionI watched episodes 127-143 of Shippuden recently. I thought... a lot of stuff about it. But it's also the start of August, and I have been thinking of doing media check-ins or something since I'm not the best at liveblogging stuff on DW (and I refuse to use Bluesky or Fedi for it). I'm going to call them art check-ins though, because I'm enjoying art, not consuming media. I'm also pretentious, probably. If I try to remember to do these at the middle and end/start of each month, that's probably good enough.
I'd liveblog more too, but it seems I always watch the best Shippuden episodes with Mikki, and I don't want to liveblog both with my mouth AND fingers on the keyboard... well, she knows what episodes are best, so rather than it being a coincidence it's more likely she asks to join me when cool stuff happens and leaves me alone during the boring parts. ANYWays,
... I dropped that shit xD I feel bad for it, but I'll come back for it later. I won't allow myself to play the third game (allegedly the best game) without beating one route of the second. It's just that...
Okay, one, the character designs are too similar to the ones in the first game, as if they were too scared to make them look different. But like. Why? I don't understand where this fear would come from.
Maybe you can't tell without me drawing lines connecting who is related to who, but yea. Every guardian looks pretty much just like whoever had his role in the previous game, except the purple/navy blue guy. Their personalites aren't all that different either. Their lives are different (ex. The teal guy was a nobleman but here he's a pirate, which is actually an interesting change tbh but the game sucked too much ass for me to want to find out how this affects things.), but that's about it. Shit's lame.
And then, the game has a LOT of yapping. There's only one fight a bit after the start of the game, and then no more for at least the entire first chapter. I played the game for over 3 hours, right? Only one trial battle with only 2 party members. That's ridiculous. I had just started The Actual Chapter One and I'm sure battle was coming... eventually... but I still didn't have all the dudes collected and I had still spent a few days just listening to people talk and playing mini games in exchange for items... I couldn't take it anymore. The game does not spark joy. I will be putting it off for a while.
And from what I saw, battles aren't even POV anymore. What the fuck. That was my favorite part.
I don't mind putting it off because it also gives me more time to improve my Japanese before I reach the third Haruka. Since it's allegedly so good, I want to make sure I understand the plot and dialogue (near-)perfectly so I can bask in its glory. I also don't hold having a rocky start against Haruka 2, because you know how being the second game in a series is. They have a reputation for being... strange.

We're four episodes into it now... The first episode was a very strong start, I like how it made you wonder when the censorship laws should take effect, and how ridiculous they can seem in a cartoon context.
Now the next few episodes have jokes like they were written during the 15 year gap and collecting dust in a drawer until this sequel got greenlit. Aged jokes and references, you know? But I never thought it was bad. It's a comedy series, sometimes the comedy will miss, you know how it is. When they squeeze 3 episodes into 25 minutes, I feel like some jokes don't land because they don't give room for certain jokes to land, but do I know Trigger to really give room to things? They tend towards making as many jokes as they can in short amounts of time. Cocomelon for horny otaku????? Possibly.
The last episode was episode 4, and I liked the Fantastic Four(?) reference. Or it's maybe a more general reference to Golden Age comics. I don't actually care much about USAmerican superheroes so I'm not an expert on this, but I'm USAmerican so I can obviously recognize the aesthetic when I see it. (Why was Kneesocks Big Challenges?) Even if it wasn't the fuuuuuuuunniest thing, it was a visual treat to me. I love visuals and animation and images and pictures, if you haven't noticed! I also think that was a crazy ass episode to make episode 4. What more could they have in store??

I don't think I've said anything about Shippuden here until now...? Well, in the past few days I've seen Jiraiya's final battle and the "Madara" truth nuke. (I know it's you Obito.)
Jiraiya first. I knew when he randomly became relevant again that it was over for him. I thought the orange-haired disciple was Juugo until I saw the purple girl make that flower origami or something. I realized then that she was that purple girl at Pain's side, and so the orange kid must be Pain. Pain is so edgy a name that it surpasses cringe and purely goes hard, by the way. Rather, because he's actually tough shit and not just some emo kid who blogs and smokes or something, the name is cool on him instead of lame. But anyways, if that's Pain and Konan, who's the red kid??
Well, funny thing: Right before I saw the episode with the disciples, oomf shared a screenshot of a Reddit post that asked "Is it emotionally abusive for Nagato to always make Konan talk to Yahiko's corpse?" and had attached to it a page from the manga of characters I recognized as Pain and that-purple-girl-next-to-Pain (They hadn't said her name yet in the anime, I think... they may not have said Pain's name either, but I recognized him from cultural osmosis.). I asked Mikki "how have I seen every chara in this pic but I recognize none of the names[?]" Funny the answer was in the next episode. However, I still don't get what the question is talking about... Nagato is doing what to Konan? Because in the manga picture there was no third person?? So I guess Pain is wearing Yahiko's corpse? And he made the corpse have his face and hair for some reason. But kept Yahiko's eyeballs. It happens. I guess.

Also something funny from me watching Shippuden: When I was at Mikki's house I was watching alone, silently, and the show dropped that Orochimaru kidnapped and killed 60 children for his research. I said "SIXTY CHILDREN???????" and she started laughing like really hard. I still can't think about it without laughing. Y'all didn't send out an AMBER alert after child 3??
Young Jiraiya is so cute/handsome. (Middle-aged Jiraiya ain't exactly shabby either.) I wish the anime had kept the piercing. You know, if the whole "wart was a piercing" thing was a mistake, they could have easily fixed it. They made new character sheets for Shippuden, I'm sure, and they still kept the wart. What the hell. But it's nice wart representation for people who need that, I guess. I normally hate pervert characters so much, but Jiraiya has the sauce or something. I don't know why I like him despite it all.
About the final battle itself... He kinda went out sad, I'm not gonna lie. He really did put up a fight, but Pain is just That Guy apparently!! He has really cool powers. I kind-of-not-really tried to read what he put on that frog's back (by reading the numbers out normally, like ichi-ni-san, not hi-fu-mi or other readings), but I kinda just assumed I'm not good enough at Japanese to crack the code. And like, if the code was so easy to crack, he wouldn't have bothered writing in code at all. So it's definitely beyond me! Why the fuck are Pain's forms all people Jiraiya knew before he met him.
They kept showing shots of Tsunade that made me think she was pregnant by Jiraiya, but that can't be true because they already did that with Asuma. Do you think if she knew he was gonna die she would've let him hit? ........... No, she still wouldn't have.
I wish I could see how everyone reacts to his death, but looks like that's getting put off due to Sudden Sasuke Hours. Naruto who?
Okay, before I get into this, can I just say that I really hate Karin?? I know this is a popular opinion, but still. To quote a text message I sent,

(If you see any TROUBLEMAKERS in my comments section harassing and libeling me about this, no you don't.)
And! And then, even though it wasn't real, Itachi held Sasuke's hands above his head to take his eye. AND THEN. Put him a chokehold or something similar to take his other one. Did anyone else see that? Am I alone? Hello? Helloooo? It's so dark in here.
Whatever. Shippuden is so awesome I hope they harvest more of Sasuke's organs (Before this scene even happens, I could tell from the new OP Sasuke will be losing his eye soon. After the initial high of knowing what will come, I felt sad because then there will be no more Sasuke gore. But then I remembered he loses an arm too. And I smiled.)
What a good fight. Sasuke being a weather machine is kind of godmodding, but Itachi did some himself too so it's fine. I liked his death scene... I liked how he fell. I can't say more without feeling like an insane weirdo. A voice from the studio audience: You ARE an insane weirdo!
Boy am I glad that fellow Orochimaru is definitively, 100% dead and gone! I sure hope he doesn't somehow make it to Boruto despite being a child-killing groomer freak ^_^ (He is so funny man)
I wonder at which point I said "whatever Itachi was trying to protect Sasuke from better be worth traumatizing him like 5 times" TT Because I've known from the start Itachi did what he did to "protect Sasuke," but I had no idea what he was trying to protect him from. I had been imagining a human-sacrifice-for-the-clan's-good-type situation. Omelas child Sasuke. But the truth was... I'm not gonna lie, Itachi should have just killed him. NOT worth it. Mikki insists history vindicates him, but I think he's just......... (sighs, resigns self to being nice) full of love for his little brother. He is "human" (he's a series of drawings shown rapidly to imitate movement, actually), so he does human things like love his brother too much to want to kill him. I was initially mad, like "okay, Sasuke's not the only kid in the clan? He probably killed many little and big brothers and sisters that night. What makes Sasuke special?" but yea, probably nothing made Sasuke special besides Itachi's brotherly love. It's not logical. People do emotional, illogical things sometimes. The fact that Karin says Killer Bee's rapping is bad implies 1. she knows what rap music is, and 2. she knows when it's bad and good. It's so easy to forget Naruto is kind of a modern-day type deal-ish thing because they (seem to?) lack telecommunications. This is crazy. Too bad Sasuke didn't emote so I can't tell how he feels about rap, and therefore I can't try to guess how he would feel about my playlists </3
Also, I kind of felt bad for Karin when she opened her shirt and she had all those bite marks everywhere. I guess because it reminded me of you-know-who from Fatamoru, but just more generally having God knows who bite her to heal themselves is kind of... The implications... But sadly she moaned when Sasuke (who had no reaction) bit her, and it's like. Okay. I resent that if I were in her place it would take everything in me to not do the same... Sasuke is so funny man. Bro beat one sick man and one sick and suicidal man and thinks he's all that. When I was early into Naruto I read a post that asked "has Sasuke ever won a fight?" so I've been playing close attention to that. I think he won against Killer Bee at least, but that was a 3v1, and he came super close to losing badly. He had to use his Plan Z. So I'm not actually sure it counts as a win. It is NOT looking good for my boy Sasuke. Killer Bee the G.O.A.T.?? In terms of fighting, definitely not rapping.
I stopped watching after Killer Bee was down for the count. There's a filler arc next, which I'm going to skip for now of course, but also... I just experienced the high/climax of Jiraiya and Itachi's deaths, plus crazy truth reveals. Itachi dies WAY earlier than I expected, by the way. After Sasuke changed his group's name to Hawk (Berserk reference? is what I would say if I was annoying) the show started slowing down again, and this Killer Bee stuff represents the start of a new arc. I expect things to be boring* again for a while. Maybe I should do Shippuden progress reports whenever an arc ends :P
*Well maybe not boring, but you know... compared to what I just saw, anything would be boring in comparison. But the arcs lately have been good -- Actually, I do remember talking about Shippuden on here before. I said that the beginning was ass. The Sakura moments were great and super necessary, but the whole arc itself... it didn't speak to me. I actually feel bad about it and I want to rewatch it because I feel like I should like Gaara more than I do. Anyways, the show hasn't reached that low again yet. Not counting filler arcs, which I am not watching for now.

I know I like it because I've managed to watch, what, ~300 episodes of this shit? Despite having a recent history of struggling to watch shows. Turns out this is yet another example of me needing to stop forcing myself to do things that should be "fun": If it's fun, I'll be drawn to it automatically and will do it even when I shouldn't. Like when I stayed up late watching Breaking Bad and watched it whenever, wherever, or when I fell asleep playing Angelique multiple times but still refused to save and quit until I beat it.
Surely a happy medium exists where I don't have to force myself to do something but I also don't do it unhealthily/irresponsibly.......... Yeah, I know, but it's nice to dream.

It's so easy to forget Naruto is kind of a modern-day type deal-ish thing because they (seem to?) lack telecommunications. This is crazy. Too bad Sasuke didn't emote so I can't tell how he feels about rap, and therefore I can't try to guess how he would feel about my playlists </3
Also, I kind of felt bad for Karin when she opened her shirt and she had all those bite marks everywhere. I guess because it reminded me of you-know-who from Fatamoru, but just more generally having God knows who bite her to heal themselves is kind of... The implications... But sadly she moaned when Sasuke (who had no reaction) bit her, and it's like. Okay. I resent that if I were in her place it would take everything in me to not do the same... I'm no better than her......... *kicks rock* Fuck my stupid baka life
Sasuke is so funny man. Bro beat one sick man and one sick and suicidal man and thinks he's all that. When I was early into Naruto I read a post that asked "has Sasuke ever won a fight?" so I've been playing close attention to that. I think he won against Killer Bee at least, but that was a 3v1, and he came super close to losing badly. He had to use his Plan Z. So I'm not actually sure it counts as a win. It is NOT looking good for my boy Sasuke. Killer Bee the G.O.A.T.?? In terms of fighting, definitely not rapping.
I stopped watching after Killer Bee was down for the count. There's a filler arc next, which I'm going to skip for now of course, but also... I just experienced the high/climax of Jiraiya and Itachi's deaths, plus crazy truth reveals. Itachi dies WAY earlier than I expected, by the way. After Sasuke changed his group's name to Hawk (Berserk reference? is what I would say if I was annoying) the show started slowing down again, and this Killer Bee stuff represents the start of a new arc. I expect things to be boring* again for a while. Maybe I should do Shippuden progress reports whenever an arc ends :P
*Well maybe not boring, but you know... compared to what I just saw, anything would be boring in comparison. But the arcs lately have been good -- Actually, I do remember talking about Shippuden on here before. I said that the beginning was ass. The Sakura moments were great and super necessary, but the whole arc itself... it didn't speak to me. I actually feel bad about it and I want to rewatch it because I feel like I should like Gaara more than I do. Anyways, the show hasn't reached that low again yet. Not counting filler arcs, which I am not watching for now.
You know, Sasuke didn't lose his eye like the opening sequence wants you to think. But I know in the future underneath his emo bang he's hiding an eye like the ones Pain has. When will Sasuke eye gore happen for real?? (Don't actually tell me. Don't spoil me more than I already have been.)
PHEW... This was a long one. If you read all that, be sure to straighten your back and drink some water. I have a lot to say about this Naruto shit!! Oomf said it was too late to get into Naruto, that it was awesome when no one knew who was stronger than who yet, but I'm having fun regardless. I know I like it because I've managed to watch, what, ~300 episodes of this shit? Despite having a recent history of struggling to watch shows. Turns out this is yet another example of me needing to stop forcing myself to do things that should be "fun": If it's fun, I'll be drawn to it automatically and will do it even when I shouldn't. Like when I stayed up late watching Breaking Bad and watched it whenever, wherever, or when I fell asleep playing Angelique multiple times but still refused to save and quit until I beat it.
Surely a happy medium exists where I don't have to force myself to do something but I also don't do it unhealthily/irresponsibly.......... Yeah, I know, but it's nice to dream.
