On Inuyasha
Jan. 13th, 2025 12:00 pmLook. I don't want to sound elitist. I really don't. But in the past few days i have seen numerous people say they thought Inuyasha was shoujo or that they're surprised to learn it isn't, as if the universe knows it irks me and keeps making it pop up to poison damage me.
I just feel like its pretty obvious Inuyasha is a shonen and not shojo. I'm sorry. Mistaking it for shoujo is such a rookie mistake. We should all know shonen manga is perfectly capable of being of the romance subgenre. It has many big hits that are romance, even! Like Kimagure Orange Road or some shit, I don't know off the top of my head, look I'm not a shonenhead okay.
And I don't mean to sound like "all shoujo looks the same," but like, c'mon man. look at it. Now look at Inuyasha for me. You think that's shoujo? Their eyes aren't sparkly at all, for one thing. And, if it were shoujo, the fights would be used to make Inuyasha look super cool and awesome and manly since he's the love interest, but I've gotten that feeling from him like twice, LMAO. You know who gets that treatment? Sesshomaru. But I'm not sure how much is actually in the manga and how much is the anime staff trying too hard to appeal to the female fanbase, because I've never read all of Inuyasha.
(Fun fact: The day after I wrote this I saw a Tumblr post talking about how isekai used to be for girls and now it's all male power fantasy video game knowledge jerkoff fests, and they included a picture of Inuyasha as an example of good classic joseimuke isekai, and I wanted to reach through the screen and shake them.)
