mik (my friend, who is not op) sent this to me hours ago and i was in such disbelief i had to go find the raws and see if there's any way people are misunderstanding, but no, it's real. specifically, what the eng tl translated as "dalliance" was originally "戯れ," and considering the context... i could simply find no heterosexual explanation.
although i will say "lover" implies "bf" when it seems to be something less... devoted than that, to me. and "important" may be a stretch because to me that implies being a new main character, not a side one.
miksters also added that if he wasn't bi he would've denied ever sleeping with a man, rather than being like uhhhhh well hmmmm i dont really remember this guy
people online love to lie and say characters are [X identity here] to cope, so i, ever the pessimist, overcorrect by not believing anything until it's confirmed directly or the chara's experience just cant align with straightness/cisness/whiteness(or asianness, depending on the work)/etc at all. and i mean AT ALL.
this, in retrospect, makes sebastian's rejection of grell perhaps reflect even worse on him. i have to reread/rewatch that arc maybe, but i swear seb wasn't just Not Into Her, but thought she was weird for being gay (i use this broadly). i could be misremembering. he could also simply not be into femmes i guess, which is a whole nother can of worms but better than being transphobic(?)
grell hasn't been relevant in years. the way she was handled at the start was pretty bad, but who's to say how toboso feels now?
whatever. that's a different topic.

if u told me 10 years ago that sebastian would have his ex male lover introduced in the manga, not only as an important character but confirming him as a bisexual I wouldve laughed in your face
