Procrastinating homework by enacting a post idea I had weeks ago: image dumps. Like link dumps... but images. Also videos! Although videos may be included in link dumps too sometimes. Depends on the vibe, you know how it is. Click on the picture for its source.

This is the first thing I put on my "list of pictures to share on DW" folder a month and a half ago. I could easily find a screenshot of this CG in better quality, but nahh. At the time I probably had something disproportionately wild to say about this picture in contrast to how tame/simple/chaste/??? it is, but I'm normal now.

I'm sleepy and have other things to do today, so I'm posting this now when I've only read over my translations once and could honestly have picked better fonts. I had meant to post both parts, but the translation for the test results of Part 2 is reeeeeally rough right now. Later I'll finish everything and repost them on [community profile] rubiroma. Typesetting, man...

I chose to translate these to sound just as heteronormative as the original text is. For the first one, it's strange that it assumes you'll only pick guys, when the female characters had fans too...

But yea. This test can be enjoyed if you don't know a thing about Angelique! Pick a fandom, and choose 5 characters from that. They all have to be from the same thing; choosing 5 of your best blorbos from assorted fandoms won't work (usually) (I think).

What is Angelique? I'm glad you asked.

Questions pulled from Angelique and Angelique Special 2. Use this as blogging inspiration, as an ask meme where your subscribers give you numbers and then you answer, as a simple questionnaire to fill out in one go, or whatever else.

1. Your favorite food(s)?

2. Your hated food(s)?

3. Your ideal partner? (Type of person you like)

4. Your unideal partner? (Type of person you dislike)

5. What's your hometown like?

6. Talk about your hobbies.

7. Anything of interest going on lately?

8. Your favorite scent?

9. Your favorite animal?

10. What's your family like?

11. Talk about your clothes. (Either your usual style, or what you're wearing right now.)

12. Thoughts on your latest project?

13. Thoughts on your coworkers/friends?

14. Thoughts on your job?

15. Thoughts on going outside?

16. Thoughts on talking to others?

17. Thoughts on love?

It wouldn't be a (partial) dating sim without the last question!

These are all questions you can ask the love interests, so if you have any interest in how they'd answer any of these... you should play Angelique... 👻

Because why read Wikipedia or something when you could read a post on a blog, right? I highly recommend reading this on a webpage where you can open and close the cut tags.

Thank you for your attention! For the sake of my mutuals who watch me reshare illustrations of lanky, godlike men in confusion, for the sake of those who see my art and wonder who these strange people are, and for the sake of those curious about video game or joseimuke history, I have written this. I will mainly focus on the first game Angelique (1994) and its rereleases, but I'll be sure to mention characters and such from the other games too.

The Basics

Angelique is a series of video games along with a media franchise encompassing anime, manga, novels, drama and music CDs, and much more. It's a series of simulation games - with one JRPG aberration and two digital board games - that forms part of the otome umbrella. In fact, it's the first otome game in history! (What is an otome game?) It's made by Ruby Party, who had to fight to prove making a game aimed just at women would work out. It's also part of their Neoromance series, a franchise of dating simulation games for girls. (Others include Harukanaru Toki no Naka de/Beyond the Stream of Time, Kiniro no Corda/La Corda d'Oro, and Neo Angelique. Maybe you've heard of them!)

The first game released in 1994 and centers around an exam to choose a new Queen for the universe. As the current one loses her power, her aide Dia leads the exam to choose a new one. Two girls from Smolney Girls' Academy on the Main Planet, Angelique and Rosalia, are chosen and whisked away to compete for the throne. To win they must properly harness the powers of the all-male guardians to nurture their own continents. Whoever fully cultivates their continent first gets to be Queen. Obviously it will go better for you if you're in the guardians' good favor, but be careful -- the Queen must be entirely devoted to her work in supporting the Universe. Or, put into other words, girls with boyfriends can't be queen.

Do NOT underestimate how long this post is. )

Do you think when a guardian turns a certain age in the seichi they get super special clothes? Or is it just the oldest who get them? Because Julious and Clavis are rather fancily dressed. I mean, irl, character-design wise, I'm sure it was just "they're light and dark, the most basic things, so we're making them the oldest and most gaudily dressed," but I mean in-world. Because when you look at art of them younger they aren't dressed super fancy.

So to combine these, I would assume that only the guardians of light and dark get super epic fancy ultra rare clothes, and they only get them after a certain age. So now I wonder if it's there's a celebration for that or not. If their home cultures said reaching a certain age is a big deal I'm sure seichi would accommodate... plus they're men; many cultures have initiations and etc. for them to mark adulthood due to the typical lack of a period, a clear marker of reaching adulthood... hm hm hm much to think about

I wish the Clavis artist hadn't nerfed his bang length so the resemblance would be even greater, but..............!!!!!!!

drawings of clavis and testament side-by-side, both in stereotypical farmer garb

They have a lot in common; I really want to draw them together. There's a lot of things I want to draw though... I wish I drew faster. Or I should dedicate a day to staying the hell off the computer so i Have to draw (or read or game).

But basically, listen. They kind of look the same, except Clavis is a little taller and his eyes are smaller. And Testament isn't built like a triangle. If using ML Tes as the point of comparison then their bodies are probably more similar, but Clavis has more shoulder. #seme. And I think of pre-Strive Tes as being bony, but Clavis has servants and friends nearby who would make him eat even if he's too melancholic to care.

They both preside over death! For Tes I think it's just an aesthetic thing; they're probably not actually the Grim Reaper... Probably seemed that way to all the people they killed, but like, you can say that about any (mass) murderer. Clavis may not have a scythe, but he is the guardian of darkness. His sacrea brings peace, but also! It brings the most eternal peace of all 😌 So he also kills people, although I wonder if the deaths in question are all from illness or suicide or something since the others guardians' power Also can bring death (ex. too much water creates floods, which *gasp* kill people)

They're both sad, lonesome, pathetic little inidividuals. Tes gets better! So Tes may not be associated with that image anymore. Clavis also gets better. I felt he was a little less cold in Etoile, so one must assume that Limoges and Colette's prescence were just so awesome that they kinda fixed him. (What does this say about Dia?) You may point out that Tes was never Alone because they had their familiars, but Clavis wasn't either because he always had the other guardians, especially Luva and Lumiale, and that's not even getting into the servants. And I suppose he had the queen aide too, although they don't show Dia interacting with them a lot? Those are a bunch of humans and Clavis still acted the way he did, so maybe he should have been a little grateful that at least he's not Testament who post-Dizzy, pre-movingtothevillage, only had Creatures of dubious linguistic abilities (/JOKE btw)

I'm going to end this by saying........... They share some hobbies :) Clavis likes tarot and scrying via crystal ball and star-gazing :) Tes likes star-gazing and fortune-telling :)) twinninggggg. and Tes has lots of outdoor hobbies besides that, so they could become his friend via the previously listed hobbies and then make him grow as a person by slowly sucking him into some more active stuff. Tes doesn't have to fix anyone, of course, but :) yknow :) we can hold someone's hand as we help them back to their feet once they decide they're ready to stand up, can't we? :D :) :3 :3c :p ^_-

Feb 12, 10:34 A.M. edit: Thanks to a very helpful person in a server, I was able to get the pic of Clavis and the deer from Fushigi no Kuni :3 For further comparison!

clavis and fawn cg (ft. zephel)testament cg, they stand ominously on the roots of a tree in a forest

You know, I coulda swore there were pictures of Tes in nature that were less ominous and had the various forest creatures on/near them, not Dizzy, but I guess I was thinking of something from a yonkoma or doujinshi. Well, if you know Testament hopefully you get the point!!

[this is a repost from another site, where no one answered me because they can sense there's something deeply wrong with me, presumably. anyways, i still want it somewhere closer to me rather than far away, collecting dust. reposted 04/21/2025]

Can I just talk about a game here because I don't know where else I'd find English-speaking fans of it? Like, this is the kind of thing that would normally be it's own post but...
This is about Angelique. Okay, so, when I played the first game I assumed that when you get the Love ending with someone, you two have to fuck off forever. He can't be a guardian anymore AND you can't have anything to do with ruling the universe. That's what it looks like, right?? Did I misread something in the ending????
I don't even remember where I learned this, but it turns out that if you get with a guardian you become the Queen's aide. Reminder that I played all the Angelique games more-or-less in order, and I got to Retour still thinking that way. Somewhere between Retour and Luminarise it clicked.
I like my idea better though. From what I've found going through many fansites on the Wayback machine, it seems most people care waaaaay more about the love endings than becoming queen ending. So most people won't feel that their dropping out the exam is a loss. But I thought that it was you either become queen, I guess become aide if you lose (frankly I did not consider what would happen if I lose because I never lose 😎), or you get with a guardian but he has to abandon the home he's made for himself and you have to lose the relationships you've made there too, + even if you return to the Main Planet everyone is old asf/dead.
Did anyone else make this mistake? Do I only prefer my mistaken idea of love endings because I love angst? Am I crazy?

Did you know? I have a sticky note on the wall behind my desk telling me what to post on Dreamwidth on certain days of the week. I was too busy and tired to actually do it even semi-consistently for a while, but while I'm free I'd like to try it. This entry will be yesterday and the day before's ... prompts? Subjects? In one. (Why not today's prompt ? Don't feel like it.)

First: I will be answering all the questions in one of those ask memes that get spread around. I would never get enough likes to be able to answer more than 3 max, so I'll be doing them all here.

47 Questions from Bluesky )

Now, I have to translate something. I'm going to go with a page or two from Angelique Memorial Book. The first few pages don't have any (non-English) text, so we move to page 8.

clavis’ eyes are very small, but his lid space… olivie should say something about this. his lid space is insane and he’s wasting it. and he’s handsome and mysterious - he could make an even greater mysterious beauty than olivie if he tried. he needs to be dolled up stat

i wish there were a more neutral word to use, but i'm pretty sure clavis is an orientalist. i mean it like a person who likes (the aesthetics of) the orient, in his case the far east specifically. i don't mean that he looks down on them or anything
interestingly, there was no planet shown in tenkuu no requiem that seemed to be Space Japan. there were characters in trois who were giving asian fantasy... but they're apparently from the future of colette's universe?? not sure what to do with this information (not to mention they feel more chinese and clavis at his most orientalist, in etoile, has a japanese feel). (elda looks a rejected design from fushigi yuugi, but thats neither here nor there)

but anyways, #yea. add this to your list of clavis interests nonexistent fanfic writers..............

Just spent $200 on Angelique stuff, will probably be spending more in a few days when I have to pay for shipping for the first $100 batch of stuff.

What did I get?
(Digital Purchases)
- Angelique (manga, yes the whole thing. applies to the other manga as well)
- Angelique Retour (manga)
- Angelique Retour ~Secret Side~ (manga)
- Yura Kairi Artbook ~Angelique 20th Anniversary~
(Physical Purchases)
- Angelique Gaiden vol. 1-4 (drama CDs, the whole series)
- Angelique Gaiden 2 vols. 1, 3, and 4 because 2 has disappeared off the face of the Earth apparently? No one is selling vol. 2. I wonder how I can be notified when someone does... (drama CDs)
- Angelique Memorial Book
- Angelique Special 2 Memorial Book
- Star Crown: Yura Kairi Angelique's Selected Art Book

It hurts badly to see the money leave my bank account, it really does. If you know me, you know I dislike spending money on frivolities and often manage to talk myself out of purchasing anything that's not food. But, Angelique obsession aside, I can justify this purchase as being for the greater good too. I'm going to have these on hand, make an Angelique fansite (maybe a general Neoromance fansite, depending on how things go), get better and better at Japanese, and I'll put all this stuff on there with translations as needed. They're out of print so no one should get mad, right? They better not. Snitches don't look.

I thought maybe this was all pointless, because if you are so into Angelique that you want to see all this stuff you probably already know Japanese. But I've decided knowing Japanese doesn't mean you always want to read it when someone else could translate it, nor does it mean having the money to buy one million books and magazines and discs. So I will still be useful. I think. I hope so!

So far I've looked through the 20th anniversary art book, and it's really so beautiful. Yura is an amazing artist. Her newer art, like for the 2025 calendar, is beginning to show signs of age... I can't explain it, but I can see it in Ikeno Koi's art too, as well as others. It's like it gets really stiff or something...? But yea, amazing art, lots I haven't seen yet. I'm excited to show it to others, but the tool to get these pages off Bookwalker requires Python knowledge or something, and I have exactly none, so... But I'll figure it out. Later, because I have a 5-page essay due tonight that I haven't started and also have no thesis for yet. I swear I will put all this stuff online. Although it might be a few weeks or months, because I'm prioritizing personal stuff on my website first, and then fannish pursuits. But I will do it. I will share these pictures, translate this manga, translate these OVAs if I'm feeling particularly insane, transcribe and translate the audio dramas, I'll do it all. Fuck the police. Angelique is awesome. Bottom text.
elyusion: (happy)
I completely forgot I had this in my Google Docs. As I was playing Retour I kept the page open and typed out things I would have shared as tweets (or as posts on some other microblogging site), but didn't because I'm easily embarrassed and don't like posting too much on such sites. Posting them here because I don't know what else to do with them. I wasn't going to include them in the big Angelique post for sure.

These absolutely aren't all the thoughts I felt I had to share while playing. Some really did land on Twitter or Bluesky and some are in DMs with friends. They'll all be summarized in the big post. Probably. This is assuming I really do write it and don't get too embarrassed or just plain lazy about it in the end.

Context for the mood at the end of this post: I'm doing schoolwork. Kind of. Honestly I'm reading a webcomic and occasionally remember I'm supposed to be writing something for school.
